Preschool children are enthusiastic learners who are actively gaining knowledge by interacting directly with the world around them. Child psychologist Jean Piaget, identifies children between ages 3 – 5 in the pre-operational stage of development. Based upon Piaget’s work and that of other child development specialists, preschool children need experiences that provide opportunities for learning and growth through all developmental areas – physical, social, cognitive and emotional.

To best meet the needs of these developmental areas in a preschool classroom, we have included lists of milestones or benchmarks for ages three, four, and five. These benchmarks are general indicators for the normal sequence of developmental skills for preschool children. They are but a guideline for educators as they plan and work with children.
